As a local company we love getting involved with our community. Sometimes that takes us to the Salvation Army or the SEMO Food Bank, but not so long ago we received a really special request from Ms. Tanda Smith, a teacher at Cape Middle School.

Ms. Smith explained that her students would be participating in an event called Hour of Code the week of December 7 and she would love to have a guest speaker come to talk about programming as a career. Our Chief of Operations, Dharshaka DC Dias, has a deep passion for education and was more than happy to have Element 74 get involved.

In the past, the only exposure the students had with coding included mostly drag and drop activities on the Hour of Code website. Ms. Smith wanted her 5th and 6th grade gifted students to go beyond the basics and become more knowledgeable about aspects of coding. Who knows? Maybe we could even get the kids excited about a career in the field.

5th and 6th graders! How awesome is that? Can you imagine being interested in coding and programming at that age?

DC was excited to get involved so he talked to Manish Manny Shrestha, our Senior Developer and Director of Software Development about presenting. Manny was just as excited to go speak with the students so he came up with a comprehensive presentation complete with interactive demos.

“In the technology industry we are seeing a big shift. As mobile devices are becoming popular, younger generations are catching up with technology faster than ever before. They are engaging themselves with applications and software such as video games, mobile apps, Facebook, Twitter, etc. on a daily basis.

Ms. Smith’s students are at the perfect age to start learning about programming, what it takes to build an application and what the future holds for them if they choose this career path. I was very impressed with the questions that they asked and it proved their genuine interest in application development. I was both honored and excited that they asked Element 74 to come and present to the students.”

From the various programming languages available and the education required to potential jobs and what a day in the life of a coder looks like, Manny’s presentation covered a lot in a short amount of time. We hope that we provided the students with some valuable insight into our field as well as a deeper interest into coding as a career.

“As a local company we enjoy giving back to the community, and I can’t think of a better way than helping our next generation. Education has always been a passion of mine and it is very rewarding to see these young minds interested in what we do and how we do it in the real word. On behalf of Element 74, Manish and I were glad to help and really enjoyed the opportunity to connect with some very driven 5th and 6th graders from the Cape Middle School. They asked great questions and it was obvious that Ms. Tanda Smith and all the teachers have done a wonderful job exposing the students to think about creative solutions.”

Thanks so much to Ms. Tanda Smith and the Cape Middle School for allowing us the privilege to come and speak with your students. It was a truly fun experience.
