Remember the simpler times when your business “just needed a website”?

We’re long past the days of simply needing an online presence. How do you stand out above your competition? The answer is simple, but the execution is not. You need outstanding content that your audience craves.

Blogging is a great way to keep your website’s content fresh and exciting, and has hundreds of benefits. We could list these, but our friends at Sprout Social have said it nicely, so learn more here.

Whether you’re new to blogging or a seasoned expert, we want to help you kick it up a notch! Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

Tip 1: Think like your audience.

Stuck on a topic? Consider your audience, and nail down their interests. Could you give them industry advice or how-to’s that might be helpful? Write content that you would want to share. Still stuck? Simply ask your audience what they want to read!

Tip 2: Vary your content.

Whether you’re writing about your industry, an internal announcement, a special segment or a silly thought, keep your posts fresh by switching it up with new topics and unexpected avenues. Expand your imagination!

Tip 3: Optimize your posts.

If possible, add a meta description. This is a brief paragraph (about 150 words) that will appear on the search engine result page. Use keywords, or words that are valuable when your audience may be searching the topic, especially in the title and meta description.

Tip 4: Give your readers a place to go for more.

Most blog software allows you to add categories, tags and related posts within your blog post. Link related posts and posts that may appeal to a similar audience. Also, use your posts to connect your readers to places on your website that may be helpful to them.

Tip 5: Show it off!

You’ve put a great amount of time and effort into your post, so tell everyone. Share your post through social media and email with an attention-grabbing image and call to action. This is a great opportunity to connect with your audience. It’s also simple and cost-effective to “boost” your post on social media to reach more people.  A bonus? If you’ve given your audience what they want to read, they’ll want to share it!

Blogging can be difficult at first, but don’t give up! All great things take practice. With a blog and a willing writer, you have the opportunity to become an industry leader or trusted expert to your audience, so take advantage. Happy blogging : )
